Vivek Ramaswamy just locked up the Republican nomination for Ohio governor on Tuesday, cementing his status as Donald Trump’s favorite rising star in the Midwest.

The health-technology entrepreneur demolished Casey Putsch, a car designer who ran on his automotive YouTube channel following, in what turned out to be no contest whatsoever. This victory launches Ramaswamy straight into the general election against Democratic nominee Amy Acton - and the battle lines are already drawn.

Trump wasted no time celebrating his protégé. The former president posted on Truth Social that he “knows Vivek well” and declared him “something SPECIAL” - praising his youth, strength, and intelligence. Not subtle. Not subtle at all.

Vice President JD Vance, Ohio’s former US Senator, traveled to Cincinnati on election day specifically to cast his ballot for Ramaswamy. The power move underscored just how much momentum the Trump machine is throwing behind this campaign.

Here’s the thing: Ohio has been sliding Republican for years, and Ramaswamy caught a massive wave. He muscled most other Republican primary contenders out of the race before the voting even started. He then weaponized his personal wealth, loaning his campaign $25 million to dominate the airwaves and social media.

Ramaswamy became a national political sensation in 2023 as a brash newcomer with serious social media game. His aggressive style during the 2024 presidential debates went viral repeatedly - but voters didn’t bite. He dropped out early and pivoted to become Trump’s top surrogate, even getting entangled with Elon Musk over the Department of Government Efficiency project.

Now comes the real fight. The general election will center on pandemic legacy - specifically, how Ohio handled Covid-19 restrictions. Acton was the state’s public health director and had a highly visible role during the crisis. Even though Republican Governor Mike DeWine (who endorsed Ramaswamy) has defended Acton’s decisions, Ramaswamy is already running ads falsely claiming she “called off Ohio’s election at the last minute, defying a judge’s order.”

DeWine himself felt compelled to fact-check the attack, telling NBC4 that HE ordered the health measures, not Acton. That’s a remarkable moment - the outgoing Republican governor actively defending a Democrat against his own party’s nominee.

This race is going to get brutally expensive and intensely personal before November.
