Iran's Judiciary Escalates Execution Spree: 1,639 Hanged in 2025 Alone
As Iran wages war with the US and Israel, authorities are systematically executing accused foreign agents and seizing assets from political opponents. The death toll is staggering.
Iran’s judicial system is ramping up a ruthless crackdown on what it calls “enemy mercenaries,” vowing to act “without leniency until the very last one.”
The promise came just hours after authorities in Tehran executed three men arrested during nationwide January protests. State media claimed the men were Mossad agents and riot leaders who used knives and swords against the Basij paramilitary forces.
But the executions don’t stop there.
In Isfahan, 21-year-old Sasan Azadvar was hanged for allegedly throwing stones at security vehicles. Multiple members of the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK), a group Iran designates as terrorist, have also been executed recently. The UN confirmed at least 21 people have been executed since the US-Israel war began on February 28, with over 4,000 arrested on national security charges.
Here’s where it gets truly alarming: human rights organizations reported that Iran carried out its highest execution rate since 1989. A report by Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty documented at least 1,639 executions in 2025 alone, a jaw-dropping 68 percent spike from 2024.
The brutality extends beyond executions. Judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei warned that asset seizures will continue targeting “traitors.” On Tuesday, authorities in Semnan province confiscated property from 22 people accused of links to Israel and hostile nations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s economic crisis is deepening. Food, medicine, and electronics prices surged this week as a US naval blockade strangles the economy. The Central Bank chief acknowledged “unacceptable” price levels while insisting citizens shouldn’t worry because “resistance is working.”
Foreign human rights organizations say the trials are shams, with families pressured into silence and no genuine legal process. Iranian authorities reject these claims, insisting the Supreme Court approves all executions.
With no lasting resolution in sight despite a ceasefire, the crackdown shows no signs of stopping. Iran’s judiciary has made its position crystal clear: dissent equals death.
