UAE Under Fire as Iran Unleashes Fresh Drone and Missile Barrage
A major fire erupts at Fujairah port after Iranian drone strikes, with three injured as regional tensions spiral amid blocked shipping lanes and mutual accusations.
The UAE is reeling from what officials describe as a coordinated Iranian attack involving drones and missiles, marking a dramatic escalation in an already volatile regional standoff.
A significant fire broke out at Fujairah, the UAE’s primary oil port and storage hub, after a drone strike hit the facility. Three Indian nationals suffered injuries in the assault. The UAE defence ministry reported intercepting three incoming missiles from Iran, though a fourth weapon reportedly splashed into the sea. Meanwhile, an Adnoc-affiliated tanker took a hit in the Strait of Hormuz, compounding the day’s chaos.
UAE officials branded the strikes a “dangerous escalation.” Iran’s state television quoted an unnamed military official claiming Tehran harbors “no plans to target the UAE,” though the evidence on the ground suggests otherwise.
The broader context remains deeply fractured. An April ceasefire agreement saw Iran halt drone and missile operations against Gulf states, yet the Strait of Hormuz has remained effectively blockaded. The US imposed its own port blockade on Iranian facilities, while roughly 20,000 seafarers aboard 2,000 vessels remain trapped since February’s initial hostilities erupted.
The skirmishes extend beyond the UAE. South Korea reported an explosion aboard one of its vessels off the coast. Oman’s Bukha saw two residents injured when a residential building came under fire. Qatar condemned the Adnoc tanker strike and demanded “unconditional reopening” of the strait.
Donald Trump’s administration claims to have “shot down” seven Iranian fast boats in the waterway and announced a new initiative dubbed “Project Freedom” to guide stranded vessels to safety. Iran denies the naval incident occurred and branded American claims about naval transits “entirely false.” Both sides continue trading accusations about missile strikes and warning shots.
Brent crude surged past $115 per barrel following the Fujairah attack, climbing over 5% on the day. The strait’s blockade threatens 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Trump pledged US intervention if the humanitarian corridor faces interference, though specifics remain unclear.
