Guilty Gear Strive 2.0 Patch Universally Panned as Balance Disaster
Users on /v/ claim the latest update nerfed mid-tier characters while leaving top-tiers untouched, destroying combo variety and core mechanics across the fighting game roster.
A discussion erupted on /v/ Thursday over Guilty Gear Strive’s latest balance patch, with users overwhelmingly condemning what they alleged to be a fundamentally broken update that gutted character viability while failing to address systemic problems.
The patch, version 2.0, introduced sweeping system-wide changes, including a revamp of PRC (Positive Roman Cancel) scaling, removal of throw invulnerability from command grabs, and adjustments to character combo routes. Commenters alleged these changes were poorly targeted, neutering mid-tier characters while leaving established top-tiers “still obnoxious.”
One respondent offered a detailed critique: “Instead of nerfing top tiers, they nerfed everyone and top tiers are still obnoxious.” The user elaborated that PRC scaling was allegedly changed to address one character’s broken damage loop, but instead of targeting that specific problem, the developers “nerfed everyone.” They claimed the command throw invulnerability removal specifically targeted characters like Venom, Slayer, and Nagoriyuki, while allegedly leaving Potemkin unaffected.
Faust players reported particular anguish. One commenter wrote: “They made some big changes, some specific and some systemwide, that really hurt the way I liked to play Faust. Particularly the fact that they removed throw invul from all command throws in the game.” The user claimed this “basically killed the way I liked playing the character,” reducing complex spacing and conditioning options to standard tick-throw scenarios.
Another user playing Testament alleged the patch created a widening power gap: “Testament on the other hand, still deals massive damage on his combos and gets good oki,” while the character allegedly lost essential close-range pressure tools. Commenters claimed characters with inherently strong fundamentals received minor nerfs alongside stat adjustments that actually buffed their neutral game.
Dissenters offered limited counterargument. One respondent claimed Sol Badguy “is absolutely fine this patch” and that “he has to learn new combo routes but that happens every season.” Another alleged the throw range difference between command grabs and regular throws “isn’t that crazy” and defended the changes as necessary.
Users contrasted the patch unfavorably with previous season 4 updates, which reportedly balanced nerfs with targeted buffs across the roster. One commenter lamented: “All I wanted was a similar patch to those in season 4, which more directly targeted characters, and they missed the mark.”
