The Cornelia Marie Is Down, But Not Out On ‘Deadliest Catch’

May 30, 2011Comments are closed.

The Cornelia Marie may no longer be fishing on Deadliest Catch, but don’t count them out just yet. Jake and Josh Harris are going to attend Captain’s school this June so they can learn how to run their own boat instead of relying on other people, as they did this  past season. As we saw on last week’s episode, the crew aboard the Cornelia Marie ended their season early after tensions with temporary Captain Derrick Ray reached an epic high. Low on funds and tired of conflict, Jake and Josh decided to end their season early.

The future of the Cornelia Marie may seem uncertain, but rest assured, the Harris brothers have every intention of returning to the Bering Sea for another crab season.

Kate O’Hare from Zap2It interviewed Josh Harris and the Executive Producer of Deadliest Catch, Jeff Conroy and asked both questions about the future of the Cornelia Marie..

Jeff Conroy on the future of the Cornelia Marie, on which the Harris brothers are now minority owners, while not yet qualified to be captains: “The thing is, these boats, they basically need to fish to make money. The Hillstrands (of the F/V Time Bandit) and (Captain Sig Hansen of) the Northwestern — all those boats, they are owner/operators.

“So they save a lot of money and make a lot of money, because they’re owner/operators, as opposed to leasing it out. I think the business gets harder and harder for the Cornelia Marie, where you have to make sure you get a captain, you have to maintain a boat, and you don’t have tons of quota.

“So, I think it’s going to be a very hard business. I don’t know how Josh and Jake will do it. … I’d love to have them out there. I want them to work it out. The truth is, there’s a lot of goodwill out there towards Jake and Josh. Even getting the quota that they got (this past season), a lot of that was people wanting to see those boys come back because of Phil.”

Josh Harris on abandoning crab fishing for showbiz:

“You know what, I would love to do something that’s easy and make money at it, but I think I would go into convulsions if I didn’t fish.

“I was trying to do a 15-second commercial for Discovery, and I couldn’t even say one line. I don’t know how successful I would be in the show business. I would love to do it, but I gotta make sure my guys are employed. I gotta do it the right way, the way my dad (the late Capt. Phil Harris) would have wanted to do it, and the way I want to do it. That’s what I want to do.”

Fans of the show want to see Jake and Josh find success aboard the Cornelia Marie, but they also want to see the boat and its crew return to Deadliest Catch. Other captains like Jonathan Hillstrand also want to see Jake and Josh succeed, but Jonathan is actually willing to help. Jonathan said (via Twitter) that he offered to captain the Cornelia for Opie season but was turned down by majority owner of the boat, Cornelia Marie Delvin, who chose Derrick Ray instead.

Phil requested Derrick Ray cover for him captaining the CM. Cornelia and the boys stayed with Derrick, because he was Phil’s choice.

I offered to help Captain the CM during Opies 2011, but Cornelia (who owns most of the boat) hired someone she was more comfortable with.

I will always be here to help Josh & Josh.

With so many people rooting for them, it’s our hope that next season will be a comeback season for the Jake, Josh and the crew of the Cornelia Marie. We’d like to see other Captains like Jonathan Hillstrand and Sig Hansen come together to lend their support and experience to help Jake and Josh find their footing in the crabbing industry without their father’s guidance.

As a fan of the Deadliest Catch, I firmly believe the show just wouldn’t be the same without the Cornelia Marie. There are more stories to be told and the show must go on – or so I hope.

What do you think?

I think Johnathan Hillstrand would’ve been a great person to help the boys during this time of learning. He was the one who stood by them when Phil was in the hospital and lost his life. You could tell how much he had to have cared for them and Phil considering he was on vacation at the time. I don’t understand why , Cornelia Marie Delvin, wouldn’t let him be with the boys on the boat to help. He’s now my favorite captain on the show, sorry Johnathan, Phil was first. Sig Hansen (who is an awesome captain) and Johnathan I think are good roll models for the boys and wish for Ms. Delvin to reconsider!

Jake and Josh, you guys made the right decision. Derek was NOT looking out for the best interests of the boat, he was stroking his own ego at the expense of you guys and the boat. A good captain would have LISTENED to your input, tried out your ideas…after all you guys may not have the “30 years of experience” that Derek kept spouting off about, but you have MORE experience on the Cornelia Marie and most importantly, the insight that your father gave you. Jake, stay strong man, don’t let anyone get under your skin and make you relapse. I agree with Billy, when Derek started up you handled it with a lot of restraint and maturity (I would have punched him in the mouth myself) and the line about “What, you wanna smell my underwear” was a classic. (If I recall the comment made it into one of the coming up snipes but not the show). I would have brought him your boxers and thrown them at him. :) I do hope to see you guys back on the show soon and with either of you two as captain, or with Jonathan Hilstrand at the wheel. To Cornelia Marie Devlin, I say please let Jonathan captain the boat, he will continue Phil’s legacy and help the boys mature into capable captains and fishermen who will make you, Phil and everyone very proud!! And to Jonathan, I have to tell you man that my great respect for you grew even stronger with all the support and compassion you showed during Phil’s hospitalization and untimely death. If I weren’t 48 and with the same blood issues Phil had I would be honored to work on the Time Bandit with you sir. If any of you guys end up in the Los Angeles area I would be honored to buy you drinks. Godspeed and good fishing to you all!

That captain Derek was an idiot, he shouldnt have been captaining a boat such great, hes a fucking loser. I will be so happy when josh or jake take captain’s chair, thats what there dad really wanted, and will make him smile in heaven.

Why is everybody ignoring the fact that Jake was wrong? His father would be so disappointed in him for having drugs on the boat and then running off like a coward. He needs to grow up. I love the boys and hope they can succeed.Somebody needs to shake him the way his father would have. The capt. was right to call the police. Jake was wrong. He needs to get a grip on himself and live up to capt Phil’s expectations.I believe that they will have a hard time catching crab until their heads are on straight. There is bad karma on that boat because of the drugs. Phil is trying to get thru to them that they are not in the right place in there heart. Grief has taken over. It will be that way until Josh stands up to Jake and Jake takes responsibility for his actions.God help them get thru this. I know it is hard to do with the world watching.

Watching Jake’s pathetic behavior was hilarious. The kid is an absolute 100% LOSER. He is a GUILTY drug using addict!! Watching him run off like the coward he is was great. It proves his guilt without a doubt. The worst part is that those two losers have the most amazing opportunity and they are literally pissing it away. I hope to see them fail and fail hard because they don’t deserve any of it

I love Deadliest Catch! My heart goes out to Josh and Jake. I think Jonathan would be the best man to captain the Cornelia Marie and a good teacher for Phil’s sons. I hope and pray that those two boys can turn their grief around and make their late dad proud! Jake is young and he saw his dad live a fast and hard life….have faith he will come around!

jeanine, no one is going to claim that Jake is a saint because he is not. He grew up with Phil’s hard living as his example and is/was heading down the same path. I believe that he will, in time, pull himself together because he really knows right from wrong. But for God’s sake, everyone needs to realize that he is grieving over the death of Phil and is trying to handle that as well as the responsibility of now being part owner of the boat!! That is a lot to ask of anyone. Besides, no one on the episode PROVED that the drugs were Jake’s…(anyone besides me notice how suspiciously one of the other crew guys was acting?)..so remember the doctrine innocent until proven guilty.

Jay, I hope you’re not in charge of any crew of any kind. Your attitude sucks sir. There was nothing funny at all about what happened and wishing for someone to fail the way you do is the REAL pathetic thing. I do agree with you on one thing..that they DO have a great opportunity and are pissing it away…but like I said above, this is a new and HUGE responsibility for both of them and they ARE going to make mistakes and bad decisions…it is all part of the process of becoming better owners and future captains.

The real problem with the boat was Derrick’s attitude. He was 100% responsible for the crew, meeting quota and making money and he FAILED big time at all three. The new captain for opies (Tony) has the right attitude and I think we’ll see as the show continues that the CM will come back strong!!

We all don’t know when your father is going to die, to say the first mine died by taking his life when I was 10. I know the pain they our going thru, my dad made his decision to take his life, I was left behind as a young girl at a very young age. I can feel the loss of losing a dad it is hard and painfull. I see how they are brave both his sons are for just being on the ship for the last years of his life. We never know what tommorow brings, but it brought them togather for a reason. We all live are lives and do our own things in life not thinking that our dad or mom or family won’t be around tommorow. I want this ship to live because this would be Phil Harris’s legacy, he was one of those people that I wished I could see in a dad, he lived his life to the fullist with no regrets, he knew his shit on the Bering Sea!!! I am so glad and have faith that the school they are going to will make their dad so proud. Go Josh & Jake luve you guys Best of Luck to you and all your crew luv u miss. They piece of the puzzle is missing on The Deadliest Catch…. Lisa

I think Derrick Ray acted pathetically: trying to get one of the owners of the boat he is working on arrested is beyond ridiculous. He failed to get any crab on the boat and would never admit to any wrong doing. Instead, he diverted attention from his failures and tried to get Jake arrested. PATHETIC DUDE!!!! GET A LIFE AND ADMIT YOUR FAILURES.
