Deadly Tornado Strikes Joplin, Missouri
May 23, 2011
A deadly tornado struck Joplin, Missouri yesterday, killing at least 89 people.
According to CNN, the death toll is expected to rise as crews continue searching for survivors.
It’s still unclear how bad the town’s devastation is because reports coming in differ. For instance, Kathy Dennis of the American Red Cross said, “75% of the town is virtually gone,” whereas Keith Stammer from Joplin’s Emergency Management said he estimates about 10-20% of the town is gone.
“The particular area that the tornado went through is just like the central portion of the city, and it’s very dense in terms of population,” Stammer said on CNN’s American Morning on Monday.
“We have been working all night long, and we will continue to do so until we get to everybody,” he said.
Either way, this is horrible news.
Our thoughts go out to those living in Joplin.
