Legendary Surfer Drowns At Mavericks
March 18, 2011
Sion Milosky, 35, died on Wednesday while big wave surfing at Mavericks, just south of San Francisco, CA, reports AOL News. According to witnesses, a large rogue wave crashed atop Milosky, forcing him way below the water, where he was unable to surface for air. Mavericks beach is known for its big waves, some reaching as high as 80 feet.
Filmmaker Chris Killen had his camera rolling when the accident occurred and had the following to say:
“He was really deep and he makes the drop, and the end section comes and just explodes behind him as he straightens out. I’m looking over just devastated. His head’s flopping, and I could tell he was blue from far away.”
Milosky’s body was found almost 20 minutes later, floating in the water.
Grant Washburn was also at Mavericks and witnessed a fellow surfer bring Milosky to the shore:
“He looked perfect. They’d removed his wetsuit, his eyes were closed, no apparent damage of any kind. Just a perfectly peaceful, healthy person. You felt like you could just jolt him back to life.”
So sad.
Milosky leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.
